The story of Magneto Special Anodes begins in 1957, when Dr. Henri Beer applied for the patent of the titanium anode. Since then, the company has been through tremendous development.
Evoqua Magneto has three locations based across the globe to support our customers:
Schiedam, Netherlands
Suzhou Industrial Park, Jiangsu Province, China
Union NJ, USA

MAGNETO Anodes can be used within the treatment of potable water, process water and wastewater and swimming pool water. The anodes have also been used for Electrodialysis, (reverse) electro deionization, softening of water, de-scaling, direct or indirect oxidation and break-down of organic contamination or cyanide, removal of small solid particles by electroflotation and membrane processes.
Hydrogen Production
A green economy will increasingly make use of hydrogen produced by water electrolysis, which is expected to play a pivotal role in the future energy landscape. Evoqua’s MAGNETO offers Ti-based anodes for water electrolysis in acid or neutral media (e.g. PEM water electrolysis) and Ni-based anodes for water electrolysis in alkaline media. The coating process allows different form factors such as plate, expanded metal, and felts and foams to be coated with an electrocatalyst or contact coating.
Seawater Electrolysis & Anti Bio-fouling
The electrolysis of seawater is used to prevent macro and micro biofouling of heating or cooling water circuits at power stations, oil platforms and on vessels, as well as to treat ballast water in line with international IMO and USCG discharge regulations. Seawater electrolysis removes the requirement to transport and store hazardous free chlorine, since it is made in-situ. MAGNETO has developed anodes with different form factors such as plate, mesh and tube with proprietary Ru MMO coating. These anodes have been extensively tested in the laboratory and in the field.
Learn MoreSwimming Pool
The water in public and private pools needs to be disinfected to avoid growth of pathogens. We offer anodes to produce on-site free chlorine as disinfectant, giving clean pool water without the need for storage and transport of harmful chemicals. MAGNETO offers Ru MMO coated anodes for in-line electrolysis of swimming pool water, and brine electrochlorination systems typically used in larger pools and aquatic parks. These anodes are typically used under reversal of polarity conditions. Extensive experience of anode development and testing, both in the lab, as well as at indoor and outdoor pools, has resulted in the optimal composition for pool water disinfection. Also, our anodes are suitable for use in low salinity (typically 1-2 g/L NaCl) pools.
Ultra Pure Water
Some specific markets, such as the semiconductor industry and (pharmaceutical) laboratories, require ultrapure water in manufacturing and syntheses. The ultrapure water is produced using a process called electrodeionization (EDI), which is similar to ED but contains additionally ion exchange resin. The electric field is applied using electrodes. MAGNETO’s electrodes, typically with Pt coating, have proven performance for many decades in EDI.
Learn MoreWater Reuse and Wastewater Treatment
The global stress on fresh water resources leads to increased reuse of brackish water and treated process and wastewaters. Electrodialysis (reversal) (ED) is an electrochemical technology that enables the removal of salts from these waters to enable reuse. The driving force in electrodialysis is provided by an electric field applied by electrodes over a membrane stack. MAGNETO offers the optimal electrodes for ED(R) of brackish water as well as wastewater effluents.
To enable reuse of treated wastewater, a tertiary treatment step is required to remove remaining inorganic materials and/or to disinfect the treated wastewater. Electrochemical oxidation and disinfection using Ti-based electrodes eliminates these substances and pathogens through direct and indirect oxidation processes. Electrochemical oxidation and disinfection can also be used for the removal of pathogens (e.g. Legionella) in cooling water circuits. Furthermore, our electrodes are used for electroflotation, i.e. the generation of oxygen and hydrogen gas bubbles to physically separate contaminants from process and wastewaters. MAGNETO can provide the electrochemical reactor (i.e. electrodes, housing, electrical and hydraulic connections) for wastewater effluent and cooling water treatment.
