Replacement of RBC Units will Improve Treatment Performance

Evoqua Water Technologies, an industry leader in mission-critical water treatment solutions, has been selected through a fair and open competitive bidding process to replace eight Rotating Biological Contactors (RBCs) that have reached the end of their useful life at the Cape May County, Municipal Utilities Authority, Cape May Wastewater Treatment Facility.

The Authority was looking to replace existing Lyco brand RBC units, originally installed over 35 years ago, with a solution that would provide Soluble Biochemical Oxygen Demand (SBOD) removal. The Authority has a long history of using the RBC process at their four wastewater treatment facilities due to their ability to accommodate significant increases in flow and load during the summer tourist season. Envirex® Series 400 RBC systems from Evoqua were selected as the ideal replacement solution based on the large media surface, flexible design, and reliable performance history.

Evoqua, with their sales partner, Iron Horse Environmental, will supply eight RBC units arranged in two trains with four units in each series for maximum performance. Each RBC unit features a heavy-duty shaft designed for superior fatigue resistance, flexible treatment with two media densities, and a hot-dipped galvanized corrosion-resistant media support system for long life. Installation of the first train will occur in late Spring 2021, with the remaining units late in 2021.

RBCs are an efficient fixed-film wastewater technology for secondary and/or advanced biological treatment. Benefits include stable process results with minimal maintenance, a small footprint with low headloss, and low energy consumption.
